I want to share a collection of articles and essays about masculinity. Our culture has some ideas about what men are supposed to be that are incredibly wounding.

In this essay/recording entitled “Why Do We Murder the Beautiful Friendships of Boys?“, author Mark Greene talks about how men are impacted by our culture’s ideas about how a man shouldn’t have platonic love relationships with other men. It speaks to a hunger that I see in many men in my practice, a hunger that is satisfied when men (re-)learn to open up to each other.

Here’s a powerful comic that clarifies some ideas about Toxic Masculinity.

25 Male Survivors Of Sexual Assault Quoting The People Who Attacked Them. Powerful.

The Mask You Live In is a must-see film for everybody. It’s a powerful documentary about the effect of distorted cultural notions of masculinity. Viewable on Netflix and elsewhere.

The opposite of masculine rape culture is masculine nurturance culture. This is a really powerful and important article about how cultural transformation about the way we care for and raise boys will help put an end to rape culture.

Men Have No Friends and Women Bear the Burden. This is an excellent article about the importance of men’s work. The only part I take issue with is the byline: “It’s women who are paying the price.” The fact is, everyone pays the price when ideas of toxic masculinity have infiltrated a culture.
